With profound sadness and heavy hearts, we remember the life of Moulana Mustaqeem Wanza, a beloved imam whose passing has deeply shaken the community of Mitchells Plain. His life was devoted to faith, service, and the spiritual upliftment of those around him, and his loss is felt far beyond the walls of the masjid he so lovingly served.
Moulana Wanza was tragically taken following Taraweeh prayers near Salaamudien Masjid on the first night of Ramadan — a time traditionally filled with peace, reflection, and unity. The moment has left a profound silence in the hearts of worshippers who had just stood beside him in prayer. What should have been a night of spiritual renewal became one of mourning for a man who dedicated his life to guiding others toward compassion and righteousness.
He was more than an imam; he was a mentor, counselor, and father figure to many. Known for his gentle manner and wise words, he offered guidance not only in matters of religion but also in everyday struggles. Young and old alike found comfort in his presence. His khutbahs were filled with reminders of mercy, patience, and unity — messages that now echo even louder in his absence.
To families, he was a source of reassurance during times of hardship. To youth, he was a teacher who listened without judgment. To elders, he was a respectful servant of the community who upheld tradition while nurturing hope for the future. His humility and sincerity reflected the values he preached, and he led by example in every aspect of his life.
The tragedy of his passing is softened only by the legacy he leaves behind: hearts guided, lives comforted, and a community strengthened by his devotion. Even in grief, many recall his frequent reminders about forgiveness, perseverance, and faith during adversity — lessons that now serve as solace.
As the community mourns, prayers continue to rise for his soul and for healing among those who loved him. Though his voice is no longer heard in the masjid, his teachings remain alive in every act of kindness inspired by him.
May his memory be a source of patience and unity, and may his legacy continue to illuminate the path for generations to come.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un — to God we belong and to Him we return.
