It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we remember Michael Valera, age 32, and William Rodman, age 34, who tragically lost their lives in a collision involving a prisoner transport van on Interstate 10 in Jackson County, Mississippi. The van, carrying two staff members and two inmates, collided with a utility truck and subsequently caught fire. Both Michael, the driver of the transport van, and inmate William Rodman were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Michael Valera was known by colleagues, friends, and family as a dedicated professional and a caring individual. As the driver of the transport van, he had responsibilities that required vigilance, commitment, and attention to the safety of others — qualities he consistently demonstrated throughout his work. His passing is a profound loss to all who knew him.

Two Dead After Prisoner Transport
William Rodman, who also lost his life in the tragic crash, is remembered for the relationships he had within his community and the impact he made in the lives he touched. While his life was cut tragically short, those who knew him will remember him with respect and compassion.
A second staff member, Javier Arroyo, age 27, and another inmate, Raymond Boertmann, age 29, sustained life-threatening injuries, and are currently receiving care. The driver of the utility truck, Jerry Jenkins, age 54, of Gautier, also suffered serious injuries and was transported by ambulance for medical treatment. Our thoughts remain with all those affected by this tragic event.
Though the circumstances of their passing were sudden and heartbreaking, the memories of Michael Valera and William Rodman, the lives they touched, and the relationships they fostered remain. May their families, friends, colleagues, and all who grieve find comfort in remembering their lives, their character, and the positive impact they had on those around them.
