His passing is mourned by family, friends, and all who were touched by his generosity, kindness, and unwavering spirit.
Kevin was born in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Peter Ronald and Annamae Barrett Ortegel. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, a proud veteran, and a man whose presence brought light and strength to those around him. He was also preceded in death by his beloved son, Justin Ortegel, his granddaughter Mia Browning, his brother Ronald Ortegel, and his sister Mary Kathrine Ortegel.

A proud veteran, Kevin served his country honorably in the United States Army, where he displayed dedication and courage, values he carried throughout his life. Following his military service, he became a talented electrician, eventually retiring after a career characterized by skill, integrity, and hard work.
Kevin’s life was defined not only by his work and service but also by his passion for the simple yet beautiful moments life has to offer. He was an outdoorsman at heart — someone who cherished gardening, fishing, swimming, and canoeing, finding joy in the freedom of nature and the peacefulness of the water. In his younger years, he kept himself physically active, and he loved spending time with his children, sharing laughter, stories, and memories that will forever be etched in their hearts.
Kevin also had a wide array of interests that spoke to his curious and creative nature. He was an avid coin collector who appreciated the history and craftsmanship behind each piece. A lover of classic rock, he found comfort and joy in the music of his youth. He was also a skilled woodworker, crafting pieces with patience and care, and delighted in the simple pleasure of grilling out for family and friends.
Above all, Kevin was known for his giving heart. He was the type of person who would offer help even at his own expense, always looking for ways to lift others up. His caring nature was evident in everything he did, and his generosity left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Kevin’s legacy lives on through his children — Kevin Michael Ortegel Jr. and his wife Tiffany, and Kristine Ortegel Browning — as well as his grandchildren: Kyle Ortegel, AJ Morford, Reece Browning, Kaydan Ortegel, Kayleigh Ortegel, Desarae Landrum “Dizzy Dez,” and Paul Wolford; and his beloved great‑grandchildren Kamryn Ortegel, Kolton Ortegel, and Emery Morford. He is also survived by his brother Kenneth Ortegel, his sister Jackie Hayord, lifelong friend Paul Ventura, and many nieces and nephews whose lives he enriched.
Kevin’s memory will forever remain in the hearts of those he loved and those who were touched by his spirit. His life was a testament to compassion, strength, and unwavering devotion to family and community. In this time of loss, may his family find comfort in the many memories of love, laughter, and moments shared together.
